Taiwanese operator Chunghwa Telecom has begun construction on its state of the art Tier 4 cloud computing datacentre in New Taipei City, northern Taiwan.

The company said that the new facility has a total area of approximately 88,600 square meters and will cost an estimated NT $13bn (roughly £280 million).

Tier 4 datacentres are built to the highest industry standards and are widely recognised as the most reliable, incorporating full fault tolerance into every aspect. Full built-in redundancy also means that Chunghwa should be able to deliver cloud services with extremely low downtime.

“The new datacentre is being built to the highest spec and we believe this will contribute to the growth of the company’s cloud services. The datacentre will also be used by customers outside of Taiwan” a company representative told Telecoms.com’s sister site Business Cloud News.

“Our cloud revenue is still pretty minimal at this point, but this means that there is lots of room for growth in this space. As we’re a leader in mobile and fixed we believe we’re well positioned to move forward with this,” she said.

The datacentre is expected to be completed by late 2014 and move into full operation by early 2015 and will help the company move forward with its cloud ambitions. The company hopes to double its cloud revenues in 2013 from NT$500m to NT$1bn and has been partnering with a number of key players over the past two years in order to make that happen.

The new datacentre demonstrates that Chunghwa is looking to invest heavily in the growth of its cloud services over the long term and gain a strong foothold in the growing Asia Pacific while it competes with traditional hardware and software vendors turned cloud providers for market share.
