The move should spur TDD-FDD integration

Alcatel-Lucent, the French network equipment supplier, has announced that it has successfully completed the first call over a trial TD-LTE network it has constructed for China Mobile.

Alcatel Lucent has constructed an end-to-end LTE solution for China Mobile covering six major cities, based on TDD spectrum, which utilises a single section of spectrum for both uplink and downlink using time division duplex technology.

China Mobile has ensured that the trial included Shanghai’s high-tech park of Zhangjiang and the financial district of Lujiazui in order to ensure the TD-LTE network gained maximum exposure to data hungry business subscribers.

Alcatel-Lucent said that the completion of the first call on the network was a major milestone in achieving that goal.

The announcement follows a memorandum of understanding that the two companies signed in April. China Mobile is the largest mobile phone company in China with nearly 600m subscribers and nearly 69 per cent market share. Alcatel Lucent said that is now has fourteen customers for its commercial LTE deployments and is involved in 60 LTE trials worldwide.

Alcatel Lucent will have two keynote speakers on stage on the LTE World Summit 2011, due to be held at the RAI, in Amsterdam between 17-18th May 2011. The company also has one of its leading technical staff members up for an Informa LTE Award for the Best Contribution to LTE, also due to be held at the LTE World Summit 2011 awards on the evening of the 17th.
