Sprint to roll out WiMAX in 17 more markets

US carrier and WiMAX poster boy Sprint has announced plans to expand its wireless broadband operations into 17 new markets.

The new additions for 2009 are: Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Boise, Bellingham, Charlotte, Corpus Christi, Greensboro, Killeen-Temple, Lubbock, Maui, Midland-Odessa, Raleigh, Salem, San Antonio, Waco, and Wichita Falls.

These markets will join Baltimore, where Sprint first launched WiMAX services 4G in September 2008. WiMAX is scheduled to launch this month in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland, and Sprint also expects to launch services in multiple markets in 2010, including Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Sprint, which rolls out WiMAX in association with network partner Clearwire, claims peak download speeds of more than 10Mbps and average downlink speeds of 3-6Mbps on its wireless broadband network.
