O2 UK inundated with iPhone software updates

UK carrier O2 has moved to quash reports that it has bungled the implementation of the  MMS element of the iPhone 3.0 update, following complaints from its customers.

The company told that it has been hit with thousands of iPhone settings update requests in the wake of Apple making the latest version of its software available late on Wednesday.

As a result, O2, which automatically reconfigures the updated devices to make use of new MMS capabilities, has built up a backlog of requests. Users who updated their Apple gadgets as soon as the software became available were still waiting for MMS to be activated on Thursday lunchtime.

O2 said users should allow up to 24 hours for the change to take effect. Contract customers will be taken care of automatically, but prepay users will need to text MMS to 1010 for free after downloading the software. O2 has more info on the version 3.0 update available here.

The free software update will add over 100 new features including: Cut, Copy and Paste; MMS; improved search; landscape keyboard; parental controls; Voice Memos; a Find My iPhone feature that works together with MobileMe; Remote Wipe; wireless downloading of movies, TV and audio programs; and peer to peer functionality.

    So, I might have got in there before the rush but MMS (and all other aspects) of update worked fine.
    8:40am – text from O2 saying they were dealing with MMS update.
    8:40am – text from O2 saying it was done!
    Not exactly a backlog…

    Lucky you. I updated my Iphone at 6PM Wednesday evening and I’m still waiting for my configuration confirmation… I’d say quite a backlog…

    Strangely enough I updated this morning and the MMS settings came through immediately. But a couple of people who sit nearby and updated last night still can’t send or receive MMS.
