Motorola buys cloud storage start up

US handset vendor Motorola this week acquired privately held start up Zecter, which specialises in cloud storage technology and media streaming.

Started three years ago, Zecter develops two software applications: ZumoDrive – a cloud storage and sync service; and ZumoCast – a personal media streaming platform.

Post acquisition, ZumoDrive will continue operation as normal and Zecter will continue to support and improve the service for the iOS, Android and WebOS platforms. ZumoCast has been temporarily suspended while the company makes several enhancements. It is widely expected that Motorola will integrate the Zecter technology into its Motoblur user interface.

In early January Motorola will separate into two publicly traded companies, with one, Motorola Mobility, focusing on handsets; and Motorola Solutions, which will continue to develop public safety radios and network gear.
