EE the best, O2 the worst: RootMetrics on UK 5G

EE has been named the UK network leader for 5G experience in a report which sees itself and Vodafone pull clear of O2 and Three.

With a report that demonstrates the best product does not always translate to the most commercially successful one, RootMetrics have ranked the UK 5G networks. As what has become normality, O2 is sitting at the bottom with EE at the top. But market share statistics have shown O2 is a successful performer, suggesting the UK consumer is much more price sensitive than performance driven.

“The way we use mobile networks has dramatically changed over the last several months. Whether people are working from home or video calling friends and loved ones, it’s clear that connectivity is becoming more important than ever to our daily lives,” said Kevin Hasley, Chief Commercial Officer at RootMetrics.

“In our most recent testing, EE continues to be the UK’s leading operator in terms of performance and their early progression with 5G puts them in a good spot going forward. However, given the recent news for the UK telecom sector, there is ample opportunity for Vodafone, Three and O2 to compete with EE.”

“Delivering the best mobile experience for our customers has never been more important. Being recognised as the UK’s best network for the seventh year running reflects our continued investment in keeping our customers connected to the things that matter most,” said BT Consumer CEO Marc Allera.

“RootMetrics’ 5G testing shows that we are a long way ahead in terms of 5G performance, and our engineers are continuing to build new sites every day to bring the latest mobile technology to even more people.”

While it is important to deliver the best experience possible, it always worth remembering this does not directly translate to commercial success. EE is not the number one in terms of market share and is consistently one of the most expensive offerings on the market.

It will be interesting to see whether EE can translate this accolade into market share, though Omdia is less convinced the firm will become market leader in the 5G era.
