Nokia Networks and du showcase 10 Gbps network in Dubai

Equipment maker Nokia and Middle Eastern telco du have demonstrated a new ‘5G’ network that hit speeds of 10GBps as they showcased the potential for IoT applications at a technology event in Dubai.

Following the 5G radio demo the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a set of common objectives for the development and evolution of 5G and IoT.

Under the terms of the MoU, the parties have agreed to use their combined expertise and cooperation to test the limits of 5G technology in trials of Nokia Networks small cells, Centralized radio access networks (RAN), multi-vendor Self-Organizing Networks (SON) and the IoT. They will also work on longer term projects such as the evolution of telecoms technology to the telco cloud and Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets).

The 5G system demonstrated by du and Nokia Networks used very high bandwidth, smart antennas, and next generation multi-carrier modulation to achieve ultra low latency and peaked at data rates of 10 Gbps. It was developed in cooperation with National Instruments (NI).

Nokia Networks’ strong portfolio and inventiveness have created a roadmap for du, which is now confident it can make a successful journey to 5G, according to Saleem Blooshi, Executive VP of Network Development and Operations at du.

“Bringing a 5G prototype to the Middle East is an initial step that will ensure the rapid realization of our smart city ambitions and reaffirm our commitments to addressing its extensive requirements,” said Blooshi.

Earlier this year, du became one of the few operators in the world to support networks running LTE-Advanced (LTE-A)

“We’re collaborating to share our experience, skills and expertise to accelerate developments in 5G and IoT technologies,” said Tony Awad, Head of du Customer Team at Nokia Networks.

Nokia has previously conducted similar trials with NTT DOCOMO and Mitsubishi. Following the agreement, signed by Farid Faraidooni, Chief Operations Officer at du, and Danny Atme, Head of Market Unit, Lower Gulf, Iran and Pakistan (LGIP), Nokia Networks, the two will commence with projects to create ultra-broadband running applications including eHealth and 4K ultra-high definition video.
