IP networking firm RadiSys has acquired traffic management specialist Continuous Computing, to better target opportunities in the rapidly growing 3G and 4G, femtocell and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) sectors.

The price of the acquisition is $73m in cash and stock with the potential of a further $15m payout based on the performance of Continuous over the next 18 months.

According to RadiSys, the acquisition of Continuous Computing allows further expansion into the LTE, femto / small cell wireless and DPI markets, giving both companies’ customers a broader set of solutions.

Indeed, many operators are investigating models that allow them to better manage the data deluge, and many eyes have fallen upon next generation technologies. But with so much legacy infrastructure still in use, congestion will remain a key issue for some time.
