Telekom Austria subsidiary A1 is upgrading its fixed network using Vplus and G.fast technology from Alcatel Lucent.
The move is part of an aim to deliver on the nationwide target of 99 percent of homes broadband speeds of at least 100mbps, up from the current level of around half.
Alcatel-Lucent will become the exclusive supplier of ultra-broadband fixed access technology for A1 Telekom Austria. This will be one of the first live commercial implementations of both technologies, which offer far greater speeds over traditional copper cables than previously possible.
“We are committed to providing our customers the highest broadband speeds and the highest quality of experience,” said Marcus Grausam, CTO of A1 Telekom Austria. “Working with Alcatel-Lucent to transform our network we will remain at the forefront of technology in Austria and meet the needs of residents for years to come.”
“The A1 deployment of G.fast and Vplus is a prime example of how operators will continue to leverage a mix of next generation DSL technologies to meet their strategic goals in the most effective and efficient way,” said Thomas Arnoldner, head of Alcatel-Lucent in Austria.
A-Lu has also been busy in Italy, helping Fastweb to roll out its WOW FI community that uses residential routers as wifi hotspots with its IP routing and user authentication technologies.
“Using our IP networking product knowledge and expertise we have created a solution for FastWeb that can easily evolve to offer cloud-based services in the future,” said Roberto Loiola, SVP for South and Central Europe at Alcatel-Lucent. “Delivering the networks that enable access everywhere and on every device is a priority for us and this innovative project is a perfect example of that work.”
