Gerry Pennell, the CIO of LOCOG, said the key difference between the Beijing Olympics and London was that in 2008 the iPhone was only one year old and as a result, there was no expectation to provide large scale connectivity for smartphones. But in London, there was such an expectation, clearly demonstrating how far the industry has moved on, introducing a new challenge in delivering effective mobile broadband.
