Telekom Austria Group and América Móvil on Friday unveiled a deal that proposes to create one of the world’s largest fibre networks, with a joint footprint with 200 Points of Presence (PoP) within 47 countries, through the interconnection of networks offering voice, roaming, data and mobile services.

The joint fibre network connection will be established between Miami and Vienna with a back-up between Dallas and Frankfurt. Telekom Austria is one the first providers to use América Móvil’s new Latin American voice hub in Miami which will process the entire voice traffic of the company in the future.

A global MPLS (Multi-Protocol-Label-Switching) network allows company sites to be linked internationally, including voice and data services supported by the highest security standards.

The move sees the two companies pull closer together as Carlos Slim’s América Móvil seeks to take control of Telekom Austria. In April this year the Mexican operator, which already holds a 26.81 per cent stake in the European group, announced a bid to acquire all outstanding shares in Telekom Austria. If its bid is successful it has pledged to back a €1bn capital  increase in the firm.

In August 2013, Telekom Austria announced a cooperation with KPN International, which resulted in one of Europe´s largest fibre networks.

Stefan Amon, head of wholesale at Telekom Austria Group, said: ”After having established the partnership with KPN International in Europe…The common infrastructure throughout 47 countries will be one of the largest worldwide therefore we can provide our customers with high quality data services.”

The Broadband LATAM conference is taking place on 3rd– 4th June 2014 at the Amcham, São Paulo, Brazil. Click here to download a brochure.
