Telekom Malaysia’s research and development division (TMR&D) has agreed to collaborate with Chinese firm FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies on joint research efforts regarding advanced optical and wireless communication technologies.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which covers cooperative research, consultancy, training, industrial attachment and other activities, and which is hoped to benefit the rollout of advanced broadband services in Malaysia.

Telekom Malaysia has already rolled out the country’s new High Speed Broadband (HSBB) network past well over 1mn Malaysian premises, and looks on track to deliver the network ahead of schedule and under budget.

Indeed, the deployment has gone so well in Malaysia that there is now talk of extending the network beyond its original target of 20 per cent of the total homes in the country and taking it into more areas outside the Klang Valley.
