UK design and engineering consultancy Atkins has won a three-year contract with the Qatar National Broadband Network (Q.NBN) company to establish and operate a new Programme Management Office (PMO) in the capital city of Doha.

Q.NBN’s fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) programme aims to connect nearly 250,000 homes and business premises across Qatar with new broadband services, and achieve the MEA region’s highest take-up of broadband services by 2015.

Godfrey McFall, Atkins’ sector managing director for Defence, Security & Communications, said: “Q.NBN is right at the forefront of helping Qatar develop a knowledge-based, sustainable economy by providing the very highest standards of enabling technologies throughout the country.”

“This exciting and challenging communications programme is strategically vital for Qatar’s future development. Our role will see us drawing on our extensive worldwide, Next Generation Networks (NGNW) consulting expertise to ensure no stone is left unturned to deliver Q.NBN’s programme efficiently, effectively, on time and to the right quality.”

Atkins’ Q.NBN project team is expected to peak at up to 40 people, comprising management consultants and Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) specialists

Atkins was the official engineering design services provider for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and is currently providing modelling, procurement, commercial and technical support for the rollout of Next Generation Broadband projects in various parts of the UK.
