Vermont Telephone upgrades broadband capabilities

US telco Vermont Telephone has selected a range of solutions from Alcatel-Lucent as it prepares to increase the availability of super-fast broadband and deliver IP video services in its service territory in Southern Vermont.

For the deployment, Alcatel-Lucent is providing Vermont Telephone with a comprehensive solution including its 100G optical coherent technology, based on Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), its 7750 Service Router, and OmniSwitch 9800E Metro Ethernet switch.

Alcatel-Lucent has also been selected as the integrator of the telco’s IPTV service, which runs on the Microsoft Mediaroom solution. Network management capabilities are provided by Alcatel-Lucent’s 5620 Service Aware Manager, and the deployment was supported by the company’s engineering and installations services team.

As a result of the deployment, the telco will be able to provide access speeds of up to 1 Gbps to its residential and business customers, as well as IPTV services. The project also expands and strengthens its existing 1,000 mile four-state optical fibre network from Vermont with connections to New York City, Boston and Montreal.

To help fund the project, Vermont Telephone has received funding from the Broadband Stimulus programme, administered by the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA).
