ZTE selected for Uruguayan national fibre project

Uruguayan telco ANTEL has chosen Chinese firm ZTE to build a national gigabit passive optical network (GPON) capable of delivering headline speeds of up to 100Mbps.

ZTE is to provide a next-generation, convergent full -service optical access platform, the ZXA10 C300, which is upgradeable to NG PON and WDM PON technologies.

The network will reach 300,000 subscribers across the country and will be built in a range of configurations, including Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH), Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB), backhaul and enterprise networks.

The tender issued for the project is described as being one of the largest ever issued in South America. ANTEL is Uruguay’s largest fixed-line operator as well as its biggest mobile carrier, with a 95.5 per cent share of the nation’s broadband market as of June 2010.
