TeliaSonera looks for new chief
June 12, 2007
International fixed and mobile operator TeliaSonera, which has a portfolio based predominantly around the Nordic and Baltic states, announced that it is to replace CEO Anders Igel.
Igel took control of the firm when it was created in 2002 from the merger of the Swedish and Finnish incumbents, Telia and Sonera.
The search for his replacement was announced at the carrier’s board meeting on Monday. The firm is looking to enter a new phase of growth, a statement said, and this would require a new leadership. “TeliaSonera needs a strong and motivating leadership focused on growth, restructuring and value enhancement,” the firm said.
The board is particularly concerned with improving the carrier’s performance in Russia, Turkey and Eurasia.
“Anders Igel has contributed to the successful combination of the two organisations and has also contributed to the merged company’s very strong financial development during the last years”, said Tom von Weymarn, chairman of the board of TeliaSonera.
The search for Igel’s replacement is now underway. Igel will not remain in place until his successor is found. He is stepping down at the end of July and, in the interim period, CFO Kim Ignatius, will take charge as acting president and CEO.
