Reinventing the Network

In today’s world, the only constant is change. Nowhere do we see this more clearly than the network. Only a few short years ago Internet connectivity was a luxury, not a necessity and a cell phone was just that – a phone, not a mobile office with Internet and video capability. Things have changed and the pace of that change keeps getting faster and faster.  Yesterday’s network cannot handle the change it is being challenged with today. Today’s network has to be flexible, scalable and reliable. It must be able to meet customer demand not only today, but well into the future.

The network of the future must address three major areas: flexibility, scalability and profitability.  Flexibility provides the ability to quickly adapt and respond to new demand and opportunities. It also enables the service provider to respond to changes in demand and capture opportunities created by major market discontinuities. As Analyst Jon Oltsik of ESG research concluded “Basically, your network has to become as flexible as virtual servers have made servers.”  So, the question becomes, “How do we do this?”

First, you must choose the right solutions to meet the need. Find the solution that can address the need today and well into the future. What you need is not a “one-size fits all”, but a flexible solution that can grow with your business as it evolves. A great example of this is multi-service platforms that have the ability to deliver multiple services from a single device. These devices enable you to easily add new services without a forklift upgrade.

Next is scalability. Being flexible is not enough. Today’s network has to be scalable. It has to provide the ability to grow with demand, without a forklift upgrade. It has to have the ability to keep pace with other technologies. Technology writer Arthur Cole summed it up well when he said, “Network scalability is like that shiny new bike you saw in the store window as a kid. You wanted it real bad, but you knew it would take some work to get it. A key difference, however, is that while the bike was a luxury, scalability is quickly becoming a necessity for the enterprise.”

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, is profitability. At the end of the day, the goal is to make money. So, the question becomes, “How do you make the service profitable?”

To be profitable, service providers must not only increase their subscriber base, but also increase revenue per user. To do this, they need greater bandwidth and capacity to provide premium services. Consultant Tim Nolle states, “Optimizing revenue means optimizing ARPU, and clearly that can’t be done effectively without an ecosystemic view of services. A service set targeting a customer population has to be created by not only a single infrastructure but also a single set of application and signaling facilities, allowing service features to be composed from a set of tools available to any service, wireline or wireless, and targeting any customer need.”

From a network perspective, this means operators must choose platforms that provide the flexibility and scalability to enable them to grow their business without repeat investment. They must be able to look ahead to identify the potential demand and partner with the technology provider that can enable them to adjust to increased demand and new services without a forklift upgrade. In essence, service providers must anticipate the future and choose solutions that will enable them to maximize their earning potential.

It all comes down to choosing the right vendor. You need a vendor that can provide the flexibility, scalability and profitability you demand while enabling you to evolve, change and grow. You need ADTRAN.
