France Telecom’s Spanish unit Amena, announced plans to join the FreeMove Alliance on Monday.

The Alliance already includes founding members Telecom Italia Mobile, T-Mobile and Orange, with Nordic operator TeliaSonera joining earlier this year.

With a policy of only allowing one operator per country to join the Alliance, Amena seized an opportunity which opened up when Telefonica Moviles left the organisation earlier this year.

Telefonica was forced to quit FreeMove when the European Commission expressed concern over a conflict of interest when the Spanish operator acquired O2 in March.

O2 is a member of rival mobile group, the Starmap Alliance, which is also working on the development of international alliance member services and roaming benefits.
