Qualcomm said Monday that its BREW application and content delivery platform has become a billion dollar industry since the first commercial deployment of BREW services in November 2001.

BREW has been commercially deployed by wireless operators in 31 countries around the world and last year broke into Europe.

In September, O2 UK announced the availability of Europe’s first handset based on Qualcomm’s uiOne BREW-based user interface offering and in December, Telecom Italia launched a variety of mobile games via the BREW Gaming Signature Solution.

“During the past five years, we are proud to have grown the BREW solution into a global premier wireless data service, and the $1bn earned by BREW publishers and developers is a testament to the innovation they have shown in bringing valuable, relevant wireless services to market,” said Bob Briggs, senior vice president and general manager, BREW for Qualcomm Internet Services.
