Datak taps Samsung for Iranian WiMAX
Datak will launch WiMAX in 2010

Iranian internet service provider Datak Telecom said it has selected Korean vendor Samsung as its sole equipment vendor for WiMAX Wave 2 kit.

The installation and deployment of WiMAX network equipment will begin in Tehran this month and Datak intends to launch its first commercial Mobile WiMAX service in the second quarter of 2010.

“WiMAX is perfect for the Iranian market where the population reaches 75 million but the internet penetration is still very low,” said Bahman Satarian, CEO of Datak.

Datak is the internet focused subsidiary of Social Security Investment Company, Iran’s largest investment house. It provides broadband internet services such as ADSL and wireless IP for business and residential users in Tehran. Datak plans to gradually extend its WiMAX services to cover all of Greater Tehran, offering VoIP, video and location-based-services as well as internet access.
