In a bid to further enhance its 3G portfolio following the mega merger with Alcatel, US equipment vendor Lucent Technologies this week announced an agreement to acquire Mobilitec, a developer of content management software for wireless service providers.

Lucent will acquire Mobilitec, a privately held company in California, for an undisclosed cash sum. The company, intends to integrate the Mobilitec portfolio to enhance Lucent’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Mobility (3G) portfolios, with Lucent’s application products to enable intelligent, personalised context-aware content delivery and targeted advertising.

Forthcoming offerings will make it possible for service providers to offer special promotions on their web storefronts that are personalised based on content, profiles, preferences, location and availability.

According to industry analyst Pyramid Research, the global market for mobile content services is expected to reach $73bn by 2010. This market estimate includes services and applications such as ring tones, games, information, music, video and graphics but excludes messaging and remote access.
