German equipment firm Siemens has signed an agreement to offload much of what remains of its communications R&D operations to Nordic IT services firm Tieto. The Finnish company will take on the Network Directory Server (NDS); IP Multimedia Systems (IMS); Home Location Register (HLR) and Radio Access (RA) businesses from a unit called Siemens Convergence Creators.
As part of the deal, approximately 220 employees, working in four countries (Vienna in Austria, Zagreb in Croatia, Brno in Czech Republic, Bratislava and Zilina in Slovakia ) will transfer to Tieto as existing employees.
“The planned transaction will be a further step in Siemens Convergence Creators’ business focusing process on innovative solutions in the fields of communication networks, service and customer management, public security, multi-media infotainment, and aerospace technology. It will support our strategy to concentrate on our core portfolio, which is of particular importance regarding our expansion activities on our regional footprint and the constantly increasing demand for our core portfolio,” said Daniel Felicio, CEO of Siemens Convergence Creators.
The rest of the unit will continue to deliver services in the fields of communications, service and customer management, public safety and security, multimedia infotainment, as well as aerospace technology. In fiscal 2013, Siemens Convergence Creators had about 1600 employees at 19 locations in nine countries, catering to firms in the telecommunications, media, transport, space, public safety and energy sectors.
