Android wins backing from Verizon

Google’s Android platform won significant support from the operator community late Tuesday, when US carrier Verizon Wireless said it had reached a landmark agreement to use the platform to deliver applications, services and devices.

Under the agreement, the companies will devote substantial resources to putting unique Android-based handsets and applications in the hands of consumers. Both Google and Verizon will create, market and distribute products and services, including the co-development of several Android-based devices that will be pre-loaded with applications from both parties as well as third-party developers.

There is no word yet on which manufacturers will put together the Android devices, but Verizon said it would start introducing the gadgets within the next few weeks.

Verizon recently launched its developer community initiative (VDC), giving developers who have created apps for platforms such as Java, BREW, Android, Windows Mobile and others the opportunity to submit their applications for deployment as V Cast apps in the company’s soon to be launched app store.

The VDC claims to provide a streamlined testing and certification process for applications, with the goal of having applications approved within 14 days of submission.
