HMD Global is seemingly targeting a new niche with the launch of the Nokia 150 and Nokia 150 Dual SIM burner phones.

While some may have assumed the purchase of the Nokia brand was a play to capitalize on the nostalgia of unlimited battery life and Snake 2, HMD has revealed its master plan as it targets drug dealers who are in need of $26 burner phones to remain connected with their associates and ensure their business is on a level platform.

Apple and Samsung execs might have been worried about a new player entering a stagnating market, but now they may be frustrated HMD is getting a jump-start in the potentially lucrative and nostalgic pimp segment.

Being serious for a second, the new features phones will be launched during the first quarter of 2017 in the APAC, IMEA and Europe regions, featuring a 2.4” screen, built-in FM radio, MP3 player and games, as well as a camera with LED flash.

“The new phones – the first Nokia feature phones to be released by HMD – combine beautiful craftsmanship with hallmark Nokia durability,” the company said in a statement. “Featuring hard-wearing polycarbonate shells and scratch-resistant colour, the Nokia 150 phones are built to last.

“With Nokia 150 and Nokia 150 Dual SIM, users have entertainment wherever they go. Both Nokia 150 and Nokia 150 Dual SIM come with built in FM radio1 and MP3 player. The large 2.4” screen and familiar user interface and keypad make the affordable Nokia 150 and Nokia 150 Dual SIM extremely easy-to-use.”

This is all well and good, but there are a few missing details. The company has basically said they have a phone which works, but omitted details on the operating system and apps which can be supported. Unless the phone supports Facebook or mobile banking, one has to ask what’s the point. The Nokia brand may get HMD some headlines, but nostalgia will only go so far.
