US chip shop Qualcomm on Monday took the wraps off a Mobile Station Modem chipset supporting CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Revision B.

Rev. B is set to deliver advanced capabilities for next generation data and multimedia services, with recent field tests boasting in average data rates of 9.3Mbps on the downlink over 5 MHz of spectrum.

The MSM7850 chipset is the first device to support Rev. B.

“The evolution of CDMA2000 networks from EV-DO Rev. A to EV-DO Rev. B allows network operators to remain leading-edge in their service and performance offerings without the need for any infrastructure hardware changes,” said Sanjay Jha, chief operating officer at Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.

The CDMA pioneer said that Rev. B. would enable applications such as mobile TV or streaming music with a concurrent voice call, or a VoIP conversation while simultaneously browsing the internet.

Future high performance devices could support forward link data rates of up to 73.5Mbps, while lower cost or pre existing devices could support 4.9 Mbps.

The chipset is scheduled to sample this year.

In other news, Qualcomm also introduced a low cost Revision A chipset, the QSC6085, designed to drive down the cost of CDMA-based 3G services already available.
