RIM extends device management to iOS, Android
Blackberry maker Research In Motion is expanding the reach of its enterprise offering known as Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to more smartphone platforms, including iOS and Android. The development is being supported by RIM’s acquisition of mobile device management firm, Ubitexx.

Blackberry maker Research In Motion is expanding the reach of its enterprise offering known as Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to more smartphone platforms, including iOS and Android. The development is being supported by RIM’s acquisition of mobile device management firm, Ubitexx.
A single web-based console is being designed to provide IT administrators with a simple and efficient way to distribute software and manage policies, inventory, security and services for BlackBerry devices, as well as other mobile devices.
According to RIM and Ubitexx, IT administrators will be able to manage devices over-the-air, including activating devices, distributing software and applications, locking or wiping devices, enforcing and resetting device passwords, setting IT policies, and managing optional mobile applications for end users.
Multi-platform BES will comprise of optional architectural components based on the configuration of an organisation’s needs, with optional components including a secure device management server for Android and iOS devices, deployed in a virtualised environment on a single server.
In related news RIM also unveiled two new additions to its flagship Bold handset portfolio, during its developer conference taking place this week. The Bold 9900 and 9930 are both powered by the Blackberry 7 OS and boast stainless steel and glass in their design. “Liquid Graphics” appears to be RIM’s answer to the “retina display”, packing in 287 DPI and 60 FPS video performance.
Under the hood is a 1.2 GHz processor and NFC capability. The two new devices will be available from the beginning of the summer.
