Orange Spain acquires Simyo MVNO

In a move aimed at strengthening its position in the Spanish market, Orange has acquired the Spanish operation of MVNO Simyo. The MVNO, which is already hosted on Orange’s network in the country has around 380,000 subscribers, was previously owned by Dutch operator group KPN.

A source close to the deal told Telecoms.com that Orange Spain splashed out in the region of €30m for Simyo. As a result, the operator’s total mobile customer base in Spain now amounts to 12.2 million subscribers.

Simyo also operates in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium as a subsidiary of KPN. In Spain, it will continue to operate as an MVNO under its own brand and will remain hosted on Orange Spain’s network. According to Orange, the move will have no impact on Simyo’s customers, who will keep their current tariffs and service conditions.

“This purchase reinforces Orange’s commitment in Spain and strengthens its position in the Spanish mobile market,” the France Telecom brand wrote in a statement.

Last month, Orange Spain joined Vodafone and Telefonica brand Movistar in launching the Joyn rich communications service to customers in Spain.
