Once again EE, the UK’s largest mobile operator, has emerged as the clear winner in the RootMetrics UK network performance rankings for the second half of 2015.
RootMetrics tests a range of performance metrics to arrive at a set of scores from which it determines its rankings. The data is very similar to the same period last year, with EE coming top in five out of the six main categories, having prevailed in two thirds of the country sub-categories and also dominated the scores in 16 metro areas.
The six categories are: overall performance, network reliability, network speed, mobile internet performance, call performance and text performance, so the first three are the biggies. Of those the only one not won by EE was network speed, which went to Three. The country rankings followed pretty much the same pattern with Three especially strong in Wales.
“EE continues to provide the best mobile performance across the UK, but we’re seeing some of the other operators making good improvements across all the different ways we use our mobile phones,” said Scott Stonham, RootMetrics GM of Europe. “Choosing the mobile operator that’s right for you is not one-size-fits-all. While some people care most about fast mobile internet so they can watch videos or download music without delay, others just want to know that they can reliably make a call or send a text.”

Incidentally Broadband Genie has announced the results of its UK fixed-line broadband provider survey and they put Virgin Media at the top. “This has been the closest year yet, but Virgin deservedly took the overall award with strong scores across all key categories,” said Rob Hilborn, Head of Strategy for Broadband Genie. “The good news for consumers is that Virgin has made the well overdue announcement that it will be expanding its service to nearly 17 million premises over the next few years, giving even more homes and businesses access to its superfast network.”
