Telenor to bid for Indian licences

Norwegian operator Telenor has announced its intent to bid for 2G spectrum licences in India, after settling its dispute with its former partner in the market, Unitech.

Telewings Communication Services, a firm fully owned by Telenor, has submitted an application to India’s Department of Telecoms. It is looking to bid for spectrum in the 1800MHz band.

“Telenor Group has indicated its interest to take part in the auction, and provided all necessary documents and financial guarantees requested to be eligible for participation in its application,” the firm said in a statement.

“A final decision on whether or not to participate will be made before the auction starts.”

The firm added that it is continuing to secure a new Indian partner and to obtain all necessary approvals to transfer Uninor assets into the new company.

Earlier this month, real estate firm Unitech agreed to dispose of its shareholding in Uninor for a nominal amount, signalling an end to the long- running saga. The two firms said they were unable to provide any further detail around the terms and conditions of the settlement.
