Qualcomm to bid for Indian spectrum

US chip shop Qualcomm has confirmed its intention to bid in India’s upcoming auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum.

By participating in the auction, Qualcomm believes it can foster the accelerated deployment of TD-LTE in the 2.3 GHz band, which Qualcomm says is the technology best suited to complement current and upcoming 3G deployments in India.

Because TD-LTE is compatible with 3G WCDMA/HSPA and EV-DO, the chip vendor envisions integrated multimode devices that support TD-LTE as well as 3G and 2G technologies and can take advantage of the respective technologies ecosystems, creating economies of scale and enabling a seamless broadband experience for consumers within India and while roaming globally.

If successful in the auction, Qualcomm said it will look for Indian partners in compliance with the country’s Foreign Direct Investment regulations, to embark on a venture for construction of a TD-LTE network.
