European operator group Tele2’s Estonian subsidiary has acquired a second 2.1GHz spectrum licence from operator PGH Raadiovõrk OÜ. Tele2 said that it has doubled its 3G mobile capacity in many areas of the country as a result of the deal.
The operator claims that the licence, awarded to it by the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority, now gives it the largest spectrum portfolio of any operator in Estonia. The firm has spectrum licences in the 450MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2600MHz, 2300 MHz and 3500MHz frequency bands in Estonia.
“I want to emphasize the importance of tech neutral licenses in both low and high bands to give us tools to provide best value services to our customers,” said Niklas Sonkin, executive VP of Central Europe and Eurasia at Tele2.
“Our spectrum portfolio puts us in a very strong position for the future, as also this new frequency can be used for upgrading to next generation LTE-Advanced.”
“Extra frequencies allow us to increase network quality and be more cost efficient when it comes to hardware,” he added.
The operator group has had a busy month, announcing a new CEO of its Netherlands subsidiary in Jeff Dodds, deploying a customer experience management solution from vendor NSN in Sweden and announcing that it is evaluating a number of strategic options for its Norwegian operations.
