Skype founders unveil Joost P2PTV

The creators of internet telephony champion Skype have officially introduced their internet TV project, based on the same peer to peer technology that has brought them success since the days of Kazaa.

Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom have used some of their proceeds from the $2.6bn sale of Skype to eBay to fund the P2PTV venture previously known as the Venice Project.

On Tuesday, the project’s official name was revealed as Joost.

Joost claims to be powered by a “secure, efficient, piracy proof internet platform that enables premium interactive video experiences while guaranteeing copyright protection for content owners and creators”.

The application is still in private beta testing but is expected to go commercial later this year.
