Hot on the heels of network enhancement announcements from rivals EE and Vodafone, Three UK had beaten them both to the punch with the commercial launch of VoLTE as well as the roll-out of its 800 MHz spectrum.
In the latest of a spate of announcements relating to Voice over LTE, Singaporean incumbent Singtel has launched what it claims is the world’s first commercial and fully featured VoLTE service. The city state operator, which launched the service in partnership with Samsung and Ericsson, said that its 4G Clearvoice service is the only live VoLTE service offering features such as call waiting and call forwarding over an LTE network.
Belgacom-owned interconnect specialist BICS this week said its platform is now enabling next generation voice services such as HD voice and VoLTE to end users.
Indian operator Tata Communications has launched a service offering international HD voice call termination to mobile operators that have launched HD voice in their domestic markets. Figures from the Global Mobile Suppliers Association show that HD voice had been launched by 61 operators in 45 countries by the end of January this year.
Operator group Telenor said it has become the first mobile operator in Norway to offer HD Voice across its network. HD Voice is an upgrade to mobile call audio designed to provide clearer sound quality during calls and filter out background noise.
The African arm of Indian operator Bharti Airtel has begun deployment of HD voice services, beginning in Rwanda, Kenya and Malawi. The firm said that these deployments are the “first step” in its ambition to roll the technology out across its entire African footprint.
Mobile operator Orange UK is really talking up its decision to be the first service provider to launch High Definition voice – an event the company is calling “the biggest advance in voice calls in twenty years”.
