Ireland’s capital, Dublin, could follow San Francisco in becoming a free wireless city if a proposal by the city’s council is approved.

Irish reports suggest that Dublin City Council has put out a tender for contractors to provide advice on how to implement the plans. The reports suggest the project could cost the capital between Eur12m and Eur20m.

The project has not been formally announced and it is understood to be still in its infancy. According to The Irish Times, one of the stipulations for the project is that it does not impact existing commercial wireless or fixed-line services.

Ireland has one of the lowest broadband penetration rates in Europe but conversely has more wifi hotspots per head of population than anywhere else in the world, with 18.3 hotspots per 1,000 people.
