Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile have announced a joint memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see the pair co-operating on research, testing and development of next generation mobile and cloud computing technologies. The MoU will see the extension of a previous joint-development arrangement on Alcatel’s ‘lightRadio’ technology.

According to a statement issued on April 20th, an agreed framework will see the two companies jointly researching and developing the evolution of mobile network architectures, “leveraging and integrating China Mobile’s ‘cloud-RAN’ and Alcatel’s lightRadio and advanced antennas technology.” Also on the agenda are research into core network structure based around virtualisation and the development of green technologies.

With China Mobile recently passing the 600 million subscribers mark, the agreement puts Alcatel-Lucent in a strong position for growth in the world’s most populous mobile market. CEO Ben Verwaayen told China Daily that the partnership would have a fundamental impact on the company as the global telecoms market shifted focus from networks to applications and services.

Earlier this year, Alcatel-Lucent introduced its lightRadio architecture that allows the breaking down of a base station into its component elements before distributing them into both antenna and cloud-like networks.  In March, the kit maker announced that it would be constructing China Mobile’s LTE trial network in Shanghai.
