Huawei, Qualcomm and China Mobile debut Uplink Data Compression 4.5G tech

The new TDD+ technology has its first commercial verification in China, claims to maximise TDD LTE uplink resources, increase the number of uplink users and reduce data latency at the cell edge.

Uplink Data Compression (UDC) was, we’re told, initially proposed by Huawei and is a component of 4.5G. The claim is that it can increase mobile data speeds to above 1Gbps, so long as it’s combined with other 4.5G technologies such as MIMO, 3D beamforming and 256QAM. UDC enables the LTE modem to compress the uplink data dynamically, depending on the circumstances, by up to 50%.

Furthermore Huawei, Qualcomm and China Mobile claim UDC tech can be deployed without the need for any hardware upgrades, either in the terminal or the network. On the network side operators need to ensure they have Evolved Node B software, while on the terminal it’s all taken care of by the modem. Qualcomm assures us its next generation of LTE modems, which will be launched later this year, will support UDC.

In other Huawei and China Mobile news, the two companies announced the commercial launch of VoLTE in Zhejiang, making it the first Chinese province to go VoLTE. This region has been the focus of new technology collaborations between the two, having been the first to make a VoLTE call back in 2013 as well as being the first to deploy fixed mobile convergence networks.
