Italy's Fastweb building extra network capacity

Italian telco Fastweb has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper Networks to strengthen its IP backbone in order to meet growing Internet traffic and service quality demands.

Nokia Siemens Networks has deployed Juniper Networks’ high-capacity T1600 flagship core routers, which were added to a Multiservice IP Backbone and integrated with the existing core and access networks.

Fastweb selected the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series (ASR 9000) earlier this month (June 2011) as the foundation of its next-generation edge network, enabling the delivering of enhanced video, voice, data and cloud services throughout its converged network.

Fastweb teamed up with Vodafone and Wind just over one year ago to launch a major Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) initiative worth €2.5bn, with the express intention of building a single point-to-point FTTH network covering the 15 largest cities in Italy within five years.
