PrimeTel secures Cyprus' third mobile operator licence

Cypriot MVNO PrimeTel has said it has secured a licence to become the country’s third mobile operator.

With the licence the MVNO plans to roll out a 4G network, becoming a fully fledged MNO, and has pledged to bring new services to market and lower its prices.

The MVNO launched in May 2011 and said that it currently has over 40,000 subscribers. It also operates a national fixed line network and offers fixed voice, internet, television and wifi services. In addition, the firm operates an International Submarine Fibre Optic Landing Station that connects Cyprus to the rest of the world.

‘The acquisition of the third mobile license has been a milestone for our company,” said PrimeTel CEO Hermes Stephanou.

“We fully recognise that the future of broadband is mobile and as such we will proceed with this investment. Our company is committed to delivering next generation services with speeds exceeding 30Mbps for mobile devices.”

Cyprus is currently served by mobile operators Cyta and MTN Cyprus, which have 840,100 and 330,000 subscribers in the country respectively, as of September 2013, according to Informa’s WCIS+.
