European telco consolidation continues apace with the news that Hutchison Whampoa and Vimpelcom are in talks to merge their Italian subsidiaries: 3 Italia and WIND, respectively.
Europe will soon gain another LTE network after 3 Italia announced that it has signed an agreement with Ericsson that will see the vendor upgrade the operator’s network to LTE offering speeds up to a theoretical limit of 100Mbps. The operator said the upgrade would be ready for a commercial launch in 2012, but did not give an exact time frame.
Swedish vendor Ericsson has announced a deal with 3 Italia that will see it take on responsibility for the modernisation and management of the operator’s data centre and IT infrastructure. The deal builds on a managed services deal covering the operator’s network, which was struck in 2005 and extended until 2014 in a further announcement last year.
Italian mobile operator 3 Italia said this week it has tapped kit vendor Thomson to deliver a mobile video headend for its mobile TV service, La3 TV.
